What I Wish I Knew Before Starting A Bullet Journal

There are a few things that I wished I knew before I started a bullet journal, I think there is a bullet journal system that can work for everyone and it really gets to me when people say they want to start one but there handwriting or creativity is lacking in some way. Yes, there are some people that make their bullet journal look amazing, but I definitely don’t think I do. I just want a place to write down anything that I find useful.

Facebook Groups

I never knew that there were so many bullet journal pages when I first started with my bullet journal, I think it is great to have a community of people that share the exact same interests as you. It is also a place where you can get inspiration and ideas for your own bullet journal page spreads as well as sharing your own. You can also ask for advice about stationery, pens and page ideas and everyone is so willing to give you a hand. Some of my favourite ones are:

Mistakes Will Happen

I was so afraid that I would make so many mistakes in my bullet journal that I would take double the amount of time to draw everything out in pencil first before going over it all in pen. When I accepted the fact that mistakes were bound to happen I came up with creative ways to hide the mistakes. I then (over time) just dived straight in with pen and felt confident enough to embrace those mistakes rather than be scared of them.

Don’t Worry About It Being Perfect Just Start

My handwriting and layouts were not perfect when I started. Actually they were shockingly bad. I just copied other people’s page spreads in the hope they would help me and in fact they did the opposite. It wasn’t until I decided to try out my own ways to do things that the bullet journal started to work for me.

There Are No Rules

The bullet journal is whatever I want it for, which I always forgot. I wanted it to look pretty more than using it for the productivity. But then I had a shift of thinking and I realised that this notebook was mine and I can make it a pretty or as minimalistic as I like. And when I decided to tone down those doodles it started being so much more useful to me.

Handwriting Doesn’t Have To Be Fancy

I always get people telling me they don’t want to start the bullet journal because they don’t think they have the neatest handwriting and they don’t have any calligraphy skills. My handwriting was no way the best and other people had far better calligraphy skill than I did. It was only because I had an interest to learn how to calligraphy and that I practised the skills every day that enabled me to get better. But the bullet journal doesn’t need fancy handwriting; it just needs to be useful to you.

You Will Become Unhealthily Obsessed

I have become so obsessed with the bullet journal. I buy so many new pens to try out and I even buy a new notebook when I haven’t even finished the one I am in. I like to buy a range of different brands to try out so that I can see which ones I like the best. I was interested in stationery before I started but now I use bullet journaling as an excuse to buy more and I love it!
